The Cunningham Dax Collection of Psychiatric Art contains over 9000 works of art produced by men and women suffering from various forms of psychiatric illness. To many of these sufferers, being able to paint is of great therapeutic value, enabling them to express and communicate their fears, obsessions and distorted perceptions. These moving images, many of them extraordinarily powerful works of art in their own right, offer us a glimpse of the world of the mentally ill. They remind us that pain and unhappiness, like hope and compassion, are part of the human condition.
